As the seasons change, most people find themselves ready for spring. However, allergy sufferers are among the few that dread this leap. Flora grows green, and pollen fills the air. As landscapers get to work and lawns are mowed, it seems like there’s nowhere you can hide from allergens. For allergy sufferers, sniffling, sneezing and watery eyes are all synonymous with springtime.
To add to this, the humid Florida climate and climbing temperatures create the perfect breeding ground for mold, which only further irritates the lungs.
Allergies can be especially difficult if you suffer from asthma; plain and simple.
For those just moving to Florida or any southern state, this might come as a surprise. But the area isn’t always friendly to people who have allergies to ragweed, pollen, mold and other substances.
However, here are a few steps you can take to alleviate allergy symptoms this spring.
#1 Be Extra Attentive to Your Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
Keep your indoor air as clean as possible. Ditch your shoes at the door so you’re not tracking dirt inside. An air purifier is a good idea, but investing in a quality HVAC system that can remove allergens, mold spores and dust from your air can literally make it easier for you to breathe.
If you’ve noticed your allergies have worsened indoors, it might be time to switch filters or call in a professional to perform routine system maintenance. Filters should be changed every two months during regular use.
#2 Prepare for the Outdoors

Wear a mask outside, especially on days with high pollen ratings. Look for one that’s impermeable to 0.3 microns. Fortunately, there are a number of apps for your smart phone that can help you track what the pollen count will be, so you can be prepared on the worst days.
#3 Keep Your Inhaler on Hand
Keep your inhaler on hand if you’re an asthmatic. Of course, this is something most asthma sufferers do, but if you’ve fallen out of the habit, it’s time to get back to it!
#4 Consider Allergy Medications
Keep medication in your purse, desk or glove compartment. Whether you prefer some Benadryl straight from the shelves or have a prescription that works well, always have some on hand. Many people find allergy shots work well. Heed the warnings, however. Some of those active ingredients aren’t intended to work while you’re driving or need to concentrate.
#5 Call Local AC to Find Out How Your HVAC Can Help You Fight Allergy Season
Your home’s AC system is responsible for circulating air and the air filters work to filter out dust and debris particulates as well as other airborne pollutants.
