5 Things to Try Before Calling Your AC Tech

When you happen to have an air conditioner problem, you may be able to fix it yourself. Some problems are very minor and require minimal effort to fix. What’s important to know is when to try and fix it yourself, and when to call an AC tech.

1. Change Air Filters

One of the most common problems with air conditioners is dirty air filters. This is a very easy fix and very inexpensive. In order to change an air filter, you have to locate where your current one is in the house. Before buying one, make sure to measure the size to get the correct filter. Replace the filter and see what happens. If air quality and coolness is not improved, try these other things.

2. Clean Condenser Coil

The condenser coil is inside of the actual AC Unit so in order to clean it, you need to shut power off to the air conditioner. Open the top and locate the condenser coil. Use the recommended cleaner and clean as directed.

3. Clean Fan

After you clean the condenser coil, check to see if the fan has any debris on it and clean it off. The fan is located right under the top and can be easily accessed once power is cut to the air conditioner. Anything unwanted on the fan can cause your air conditioner to work improperly.

 4. Check Drain

Air conditioners have to drain the excess water caused by humidity. If the drain gets clogged, it can cause the moisture to stay in the ducts, which in turn causes a wet air filter. You can unclog this drain with a piece of wire by running it through to move any obstruction through.

 5. Insulate Refrigerant Lines

If your air does not feel as cold as it should be, a possible cause is that the refrigerant lines are not insulated. This is another low cost fix, and can be done with minimal effort. These lines are located on the outside unit going to the indoor unit. These sleeves that go over the lines will keep the refrigerant lines cooler. This in turn leads to cooler air into your house.
